This pichhwai illustrates the pictorial realism that was the hallmark of the legendary Nathdwara artist Ghasiram Hardev Sharma (1868-1930). By using Western techniques such as wet-colourshading, and aniline dyes imported from Europe, Ghasiram succeeded in producing dramatically different visual expressions of traditional subjects, as for example, the Daan Lila depicted here. Landscape naturalism, and the incorporation of architectural vignettes drawn from popular European print-making allowed the artist to innovate while retaining an essentially native flavour.
The scene of Krishna, Balarama and their shepherd friends demanding a toll of milk and curd from the milkmaids of Vrindavana is enlivened by the lively interaction between the gopas and the milkmaids, and by monkeys caught in rapid action. Note the shading of the animals and of the sky, and the introduction of domed pavilions and a walled structure in the background.
Typically, Ghasiramji's sketch would be executed by disciples working in his studio, under his supervision.
